John A. Downing Receives ASLO National Distinguished Service Award

Minnesota Sea Grant Director John A. Downing has been awarded the Tommy and Yvette Edmondson Distinguished Service Award by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography for his decades of leadership and dedication to the aquatic science community.

ST. PAUL and DULUTH, Minn. — The Minnesota Sea Grant Program announces that Director John A. Downing will receive the Tommy and Yvette Edmondson Distinguished Service Award from the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography.

The award recognizes exceptional, sustained service to the aquatic science community through contributions that strengthen the society, support its members, and advance its mission. It will be presented at the 2026 ASLO Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

“This is a service award, and John’s impact is clear in the strength and effectiveness of ASLO today,” said ASLO President Susanne Menden-Deuer. “He could not be more deserving, and I could not be more pleased to give this award to him, with the unanimous support of the ASLO Board.”

The Edmondson Distinguished Service Award is a long-standing honor within ASLO. It recognizes members whose efforts sustain the organization’s operations, leadership, and community over time, focusing on service to the society and its members.

Downing has contributed to ASLO across decades of leadership and service. He served as ASLO president and president-elect, was elected to the Board of Directors, and chaired multiple committees, including finance, strategic planning,  nominations and awards. He also led major search efforts for key leadership positions, contributed to publications and evaluation committees, and helped organize international scientific meetings.

In addition to his service, Downing has received several ASLO honors for scientific contributions, including two John H. Martin Awards, the Ruth Patrick Award and election as a Sustaining Fellow. Together, his record reflects a career that has shaped both the science and the professional community that supports it.

At Minnesota Sea Grant, Downing leads efforts to connect research with community needs across Minnesota’s coastal and inland waters. His recognition by ASLO highlights the importance of sustained service in building strong scientific organizations and supporting the people who rely on them.

Minnesota Sea Grant is a system program of the University of Minnesota and one of 34 federal-university Sea Grant partnerships across the country supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Great Lakes and coastal states that encourage the wise stewardship of our marine resources through research, outreach, communication, education and technology transfer.
