Description:

At this Coastal of Hazards of Superior (CHAOS) member meeting, you will hear Minnesota and Wisconsin coastal outreach organizations share about brand new tools and resources available to the region. Tune in to hear the latest in Great Lakes nature-based shoreline guides and local demonstration projects, soon-to-be released products to help with water levels and shoreline planting education, and even ... a coastal resilience board game? All that, plus an update on the future of CHAOS, is on the agenda for the fall 2021 meeting!

Speakers and topics include:

Madison Rodman, resilience extension educator for Minnesota Sea Grant will share the Watershed Game Coast Model, a new addition to the Watershed Game program, which focuses on improving water quality while increasing community resilience to flooding. Madison will also highlight a new Lake Superior Water Levels Course for residents and property owners.

Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program will share the latest on a new project to pilot the use of living shorelines on Lake Superior.

Adam Bechle, coastal engineering outreach specialist for Wisconsin Sea Grant will discuss the newly published guide “Nature-Based Shoreline Options for Great Lakes Coasts”, which features examples from across the region. A new “Property Owner’s Guide to Protecting Your Bluff” will also be introduced.

Karina Heim, coastal training program coordinator for the Lake Superior Reserve will announce a newly funded project to develop a shoreline planting guide for Lake Superior coastal environments, and a chance for CHAOS members to shape the development of this tool.

Kate Angel, federal consistency and coastal hazards coordinator for the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program will provide an update on transitions with the CHAOS project and the search for a new fellow/coordinator.
