Sparking Community Climate Action Through Collaboration Presentation

Lightning Talk Session at the 2023 Midwest Climate Resilience Conference

This Sparking Community Climate Action Through Collaboration presentation is one of several lightning talk sessions at the Midwest Climate Resilience Conference October 25-27, 2023, in Duluth, Minnesota.

The conference will be hosted by the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership in collaboration with a wide range of partners and supporters, including Minnesota Sea Grant.

The conference brings together citizens and representatives from the public, private, and non-profit sectors to inspire and encourage climate adaptation in communities throughout Minnesota and broadly the Midwest region.

Minnesota Sea Grant Resilience Extension Educator Madison Rodman will be leading the Sparking Community Climate Action Through Collaboration lightning talk session on October 26, 2023.

Description

Midwest communities face multiple climate challenges, from floods to extreme heat to climate variability and uncertainty. Marginalized and low-income communities, communities of color, and those lacking access to safe and stable neighborhoods and homes often experience these challenges most acutely, yet have the fewest means to respond to stresses. Small and medium-size communities across the Midwest face a unique challenge, with community needs typically outstripping local capacity.

This lightning talk session will feature voices and projects of leaders supporting communities and neighborhoods with technical assistance and leadership to improve community resilience to climate change. Session presenters will highlight practices for equitable and inclusive community engagement and how they are fostering collaboration in their communities.

Highlights include:

  • The application of multi-beneficial green infrastructure in food scarce neighborhoods.
  • Providing one-on-one support to communities to address their climate goals.
  • Successful methods for engaging directly with residents to envision safe, walkable neighborhoods with aesthetic and purposeful green spaces.

After a series of brief lightning talks, presenters will provide additional insight about their work and how to replicate processes used through a panel discussion with facilitated question and answer time from the audience.
