An Overnight Camp Experience for Youth Ages 9-12 and an Adult Mentor. Educators Also Welcome.

What is this event?

Minnesota Sea Grant, National Park Service, and Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa are offering three, free, two-day overnight camp experiences for new and beginning campers. Each trip begins and ends at Grand Portage National Monument and includes a day trip aboard the Sea Hunter III to the Windigo Visitors Center on Isle Royale National Park.

What will I do?

On day one, participants and instructors will explore and camp overnight at Grand Portage National Monument while learning camping and leave-no-trace camping skills, cultural and natural history of Lake Superior, Grand Portage and Isle Royale, and about tribal management of natural resources. On the morning of day two, participants and instructors will board the Sea Hunter III and cruise to the Windigo Visitors Center in Isle Royale National Park for an interpretive program.

Who should come?

Youth ages 9-12 and an adult mentor. Mentors can be teachers, educators, parents, grandparents, guardians, youth group leaders, and other responsible adults.  

What is provided?

Campsites, firepits, firewood, drinking water, toilets, toilet paper, first aid kit,  round-trip boat trip from Grand Portage National Monument to Isle Royale National Park.

What do participants bring?

  • Clothing - layers suitable for forecasted weather (preferably not cotton)
    • T-shirt
    • Long-sleeved shirt
    • Long pants
    • Rain jacket
    • Rain pants
    • Hiking boots or other substantial shoes (no flip-flops)
    • Second pair of shoes for lounging around camp
    • Socks (2 pair - that way one is always dry)
    • Sun hat/ball cap
    • Hat for warmth (it gets chilly on Lake Superior even in July and August)
  • Cooking and eating utensils
  • Pocket knife or multi-tool
  • Matches or lighter
  • Food
    • Dinner you can cook over a fire on a stick (or an easy dinner you can prepare with your cooking utensils)
    • Breakfast for day 2 (fast, easy - no cook)
    • Lunch and snacks for boat trip
    • Coffee or other warm beverages
  • Tent*
  • Sleeping bag
  • Flashlight and/or headlamp
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Dayback
    • Sunscreen
    • Insect repellant
    • Camera
    • Water bottle

*Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply in Grand Marais has a limited number of tents to rent ($25/day).

Optional items:

  • Sleeping pad
  • Pillow
  • Camp chair/stool/bucket/cooler - something to sit on
  • Small cooler
  • Dramamine or ginger (Gin-Gin candy) for sea sickness
  • Head net
  • Cooking grate for open fire or skewers
  • Marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate (to make smores over a campfire)
