Still Getting Warmer, Still Getting Wetter (Even in Drought)

December 2023 Twin Ports Climate Conversations

This is a recording of the 7/18/23 event.

Speaker:

Kenny Blumenfeld, senior climatologist, Minnesota State Climatology Office, Division of Ecological and Water Resources, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Presentation:

Minnesota State Climatology Office Senior Climatologist Kenny Blumenfeld will give a presentation on predominant climate trends and projections in Minnesota, with particular emphasis on precipitation and hydroclimate extremes.

During the 2020s (so far), Minnesota has had three consecutive years of significant growing season drought somewhere in the state. These droughts have been broken by heavy and even record-setting cool-season precipitation regimes. The results have been annual precipitation amounts well above what has been typical during drought years. The state has continued to see heavy and extreme precipitation events, even during the dry growing seasons, and some of these have been historically large or intense. The early 2020s stand out as the wettest dry period on record.
