River Talks Series: Deterring Geese on the St. Louis River to Protect Wild Rice

Description

Sam Hansen, former undergraduate research fellow with the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, will present, "Deterring Geese on the St. Louis River to Protect Wild Rice."

Northern wild rice, native to the St. Louis River, was once abundant. Today, it is threatened by high water levels and increased feeding pressure by Canada geese. Hansen will describe his project to determine if low-impact kayaking in wild rice bays could reduce the abundance of geese.

Hansen's talk will be recorded and posted afterward on the Reserve's Facebook page. A summary will also be posted on Wisconsin Sea Grant's blog.

River Talks are sponsored by The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs.

River Talks Series

The River Talks 2019-29 season is the seventh year of science cafe-style evening talks about the St. Louis River Estuary. The River Talks is a free, annual, informal speaker series about the St. Louis River Estuary in Duluth-Superior and a cooperative project between the Wisconsin and Minnesota Sea Grant programs and the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve. The talks will be held monthly through May 2020 at the Reserve's Lake Superior Estuarium on Barker's Island in Superior.

Come learn about the St. Louis River! Scientists, businesses, and agency staff who work and depend on the St. Louis River Estuary will share their thoughts and information about river projects each month during the academic year. We encourage you to ask questions and share your thoughts, too.
