Great Lakes Shipping and Weather Forecasting: A Professional Development Workshop for Educators

Minnesota Sea Grant is hosting a professional development workshop for formal and nonformal educators of K-12 youth.

The event will be focused on the Great Lakes maritime transportation system, the weather forecasting that keeps vessels and their crews safe, and the real-time observations that inform those forecasts. The workshop content would be most appropriate for educators of middle- and high-school youth.

After participating in this workshop, educators will have a better understanding of Great Lakes shipping, how vessel-based observations are used to develop marine forecasts, and weather forecasting models. A sneak peek of MNSG's Great Lakes Shipping 101 curriculum, currently in development, will be provided. Educators will have an opportunity to network and reflect on how these concepts can be incorporated into their curriculum.

This workshop is free to attend, and stipends will be available for educators traveling outside of the Duluth, Minnesota area to cover the cost of travel. Workshop participants will earn 0.7 continuing education units.

The workshop agenda is under development and will be made available once finalized.

Advance registration is required for all participants.
