Description:

Minnesota Sea Grant Environmental Literacy Extension Educator, Marte Kitson will give a presentation about Minnesota Sea Grant's Shipboard Science Workshops and the Lake Guardian research vessel Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the Minnesota Conference on Science Education hosted by the Minnesota Science Teachers Association.

Every year fifteen teachers board the Lake Guardian, a United States Environmental Protection Agency research vessel, to work alongside scientists on one of the Great Lakes. During this week-long immersion into aquatic science, teachers work in teams of three to five with a scientist to collect data, contribute to the scientific body of knowledge, and increase their own Great Lakes literacy. In this small, floating community, teachers create a research presentation or lesson plan to bring back to their students, and they create formative relationships with fellow educators and scientists that last well beyond the workshop. Attend this presentation to learn more about this experience, some ways previous participants have incorporated data into their teaching, and when the next workshop will set sail.

Speaker:

Minnesota Sea Grant Environmental Literacy Extension Educator Marte Kitson.
