Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detectors Webinar: Can Removing Invasive Cattails Benefit Lakes?

Learn from MNSG's Amy Schrank, extension program leader and fisheries and aquaculture extension educator, for an educational webinar about potential benefits of removing invasive cattails, hosted by the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) as part of their Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detectors Webinars.

One important characteristic of a healthy lake is a diverse community of aquatic plants in the nearshore zone. Yet, in many Minnesotan lakes, invasive, hybrid cattails are overtaking nearshore zones and altering the habitat by forming dense, homogenous stands of invasive cattails. These dense stands can have negative effects on lake ecosystems and can be a nuisance to landowners as they prevent lake access and overtake shoreline areas.

The goal of MNSG's Invasive Cattail-Dominated Shorelines project is to determine if small-scale removal of invasive, hybrid cattails can improve abundance and diversity of plants and fish on Minnesota lakeshores.
