8th Annual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Roundtable

Learn from MNSG's Amy Schrank, extension program leader and fisheries and aquaculture extension educator, for an educational session titled "Enhancing Habitat and Diversity in Cattail-Dominated Shorelines," in collaboration with Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC). This session is part of the 8th Annual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Roundtable, hosted by the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA) and the Crow Wing County Lakes and Rivers Alliance (LARA).

One important characteristic of a healthy lake is a diverse community of aquatic plants in the nearshore zone. Yet, in many Minnesotan lakes, invasive, hybrid cattails are overtaking nearshore zones and altering the habitat by forming dense, homogenous stands of invasive cattails. These dense stands can have negative effects on lake ecosystems and can be a nuisance to landowners as they prevent lake access and overtake shoreline areas.

The goal of MNSG's Invasive Cattail-Dominated Shorelines project is to determine if small-scale removal of invasive, hybrid cattails can improve abundance and diversity of plants and fish on Minnesota lakeshores.
