Uniting to Advance Freshwater Oil Spill Research, Preparedness, and Response

The Minnesota Sea Grant-led HazMaTON team will lead a session at the joint conference of the International Association for Great Lakes Research and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences. "Uniting to Advance Freshwater Oil Spill Research, Preparedness and Response" will feature 12 in-person oral presentations, along with a one-hour panel discussion.

The HazMaTON session will unite researchers, Indigenous knowledge keepers, managers, policymakers, and community leaders to explore the unique challenges of preparing for, responding to, and recovering from oil spills in freshwater systems. Emphasizing the importance of Indigenous perspectives and place-based knowledge in stewardship and resilience, this session includes a panel discussion on Indigenous engagement in oil spill science in the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River basin and beyond. 

This session is open to registered conference attendees. The joint conference will occur May 25-29, 2026. Registration is required.
