This mobile learning event is part of the University of Minnesota's Fall Program Conference. It is for anyone with an interest in learning more about commercial navigation on the Great Lakes.
From the conference location at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, participants will walk to the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, stopping along the way at the William A. Irvin Museum Ship for a “Great Lakes Shipping 101” lightning talk.
Next, at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, park rangers will provide a walking tour that will dive into the history of the Duluth Ship Canal, North Pier Lighthouse and the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge.
From there, participants will navigate to the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Great Waters Research Collaborative Land-Based Research Facility to learn more about the process of testing ballast water treatment technologies to reduce the risk of ship-mediated invasive species in the Laurentian Great Lakes. On the bus ride to the research facility, participants will have another lightning talk called “Ins and Outs of Ballast Water.”
