Sharon Moen Presents With Tomorrow in Mind at Subtext

July 21, 2016
7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
6 West Fifth Street
St. Paul, MN

Free and open to the public.

Join Sea Grant's Sharon Moen in a conversation about an exceptional character: Athelstan Spilhaus. Moen's biography about Dr. Spilhaus, With Tomorrow in Mind: How Athelstan Spilhaus Turned America Toward the Future, offers a compelling profile of a man that some called a "gadfly" and others "the flywheel of the machine of American science." The biography spans an era of history that includes WWII, the "Roswell Incident," the founding of the National Sea Grant Program, and the space race. Spilhaus invented the Minneapolis and St. Paul skyway system, served as Dean of the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota for 20 years, as UNESCO's first ambassador to the UN, and was responsible for the success of the Seattle World's Fair. "Spilly", as he was known, was an oceanographer, educator, inventor, diplomat, artist and visionary. He is an inspiration for our time.
