Open House to Highlight Chester Creek Future

Minnesota Sea Grant welcomes the public on Thursday, June 12, from 2 to 7:30 p.m. to an open house: When Chester Creek Floods. The open house will be in the commons area of the University of Minnesota Duluth's Chester Park Building at the corner of Woodland Ave. and College Street.

The open house concerns flooding in the Chester Creek watershed and what might be done to curtail damage. People stopping by this free event will have a chance to learn how green infrastructure such as wetlands, pervious pavement and rain gardens could be part of the city's answer to managing stormwater. This community event involves presentations by coastal storms experts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and opportunities to ask questions about future precipitation, flooding, development and climate in the Chester Creek watershed.

The open house comes after a yearlong study conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Services Center (CSC) in cooperation with the City of Duluth. Responding to issues discovered following the Duluth flood in June 2012, the City and the CSC examined ecologically based options to reduce runoff and flood volume within the Chester Creek watershed. The resulting report synthesizes data that will inform city planning both in Duluth and elsewhere.

Join your neighbors on June 12 for a free event at UMD's Chester Park Building to learn about flooding in Duluth and the potential for green infrastructure in the region. For more information, click here or contact Hilarie Sorensen by phone at (218)726-7677 or by email at soren360@d.umn.edu.
