All Aboard the Fish Bus!

A Salute to Lake Superior's Sustainable Fisheries event

Northlanders wanting an epicurean adventure can hop on Minnesota Sea Grant's Fish Bus on November 13 for a trip to A Salute to Lake Superior's Sustainable Fisheries, a professional chef cook-off and public tasting event in Minneapolis. The bus ticket is $10 per seat and the event cost is $20 per person. The Fish Bus will leave from the Kirby Student Center at the University of Minnesota Duluth at 1:45 p.m. It will stop at Bayfront Park and at the McDonalds in Proctor before heading to the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. It will make the return trip immediately after the Salute ends at 7:30 p.m.

At the Salute, 11 chefs will compete for $1000 and public approval by turning Lake Superior's lake herring into exquisite entrees. Acclaimed Minnesota musician Michael Monroe will perform live music throughout the evening while attendees sample the chefs' takes on this heart-healthy, seasonally abundant, local fish. North Shore chefs in the competition include:

  • Chef Avery Cassar from At Sara's Table/Chester Creek Café
  • Chef Scott Graden from New Scenic Café
  • Chef Ed Douglass from Naniboujou Lodge

The one-night event hosted by the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program spotlights the state's seasonal supply of Lake Superior lake herring and celebrates the people involved in managing, harvesting, studying and preparing the sustainably harvested fish. Event sponsors include Dockside Fish Market, Minnesota Zoo's Fish Smart Program, and the Mpls. St. Paul Magazine.

Tickets for the event and Fish Bus are available through Minnesota Sea Grant by calling 218-726-8106 or visiting www.seagrant.umn.edu/fisheries/salute.
