River Quest

May 9-12, 2011
Vista Fleet, DECC
Duluth, Minn.

Every year the St. Louis River Quest program brings over 800 area sixth graders from the Duluth-Superior area on a harbor tour aboard the Vista Star. The excursion vessel, Vista Star, becomes a floating classroom that tours the students through 10 learning stations specifically designed to give them hands-on experiences with the industrial, environmental, commercial or recreational activities within the Duluth-Superior Harbor. Learning station lessons are provided by the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, U.S. Coast Guard, Midwest Energy Resources Company and Minnesota Sea Grant.

Created in 1993, River Quest is designed to instill environmental stewardship in area sixth graders while helping them understand industrial, commercial and recreational activities in the St. Louis Harbor. It highlights the St. Louis River Estuary as an asset allowing the students to think about water quality and the ways in which water affects the environment, and also the ways that their actions impact water quality.
